The Songs of Leonard Cohen

Each song stripped back - desolate, naked and sensual
The most enigmatic, mysterious and sub textural songwriter the English speaking world has ever known. Revered and covered by the entire music community; Leonard Cohen’s exact sense of prose, his wry humour and his courage to wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line.
His recent spectacular world tour of stadium venues has been successful beyond belief but has not, with regret, exposed the solitary inner strength of the songs in their original form.
With my undying love of the ‘pure song’ it gives me great pleasure to bring this amazing material to Arts Centres and Theatres across the UK and to perform these songs in an intimate and sensitive way.
Also included are Poems by Federico Garcia Lorca and Leonard Cohen that I have set to music.
‘certainly the UK’s most celebrated and evocative interpreter of golden music’ The Guardian
‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’ The Independent
‘Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice’ Sunday Times
‘a sensitive and pleasingly understated delivery, all the better that the songs might speak for themselves’ Acoustic Magazine
The Great Canadian Song Book
The music of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen

Personal interpretations of Songs by Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.
An evening of music with such depth, that it resonates within the very fabric of the soul.
“I was introduced to the music of these writers around 35 – 40 years ago. There sense of prophecy and insight has stayed with me and belongs both to me and all of us who swell up with questions of desire and frustration as to the jagged formations of modern life and the possibility of human enrichment, against all odds. This music is not meant for a generation past; it stands by itself; to transcend all superficiality as does a Baby’s first smile, a neighbour’s home made bread or the comforting sound of wind hurrying through the tree tops”.
The evening begins with a bio-documentary on the life and music of Joni Mitchell
An entirely solo 12 track CD Album of this exact music is available from
September 25th. It is entitled ‘Mix Tape’

THE GREAT CANADIAN SONGBOOK An intimate concert. Music of such integrity that it flows from the innermost wellspring of human spirit. “It was around 40 years ago that I became drawn to these 3 wonderful songwriters, unaware at the time that each of them are Canadian. I am still in awe of their profound contribution and of all the dots that they have joined up in the lives of millions of us across the world. Their music forms the backdrop to all of the joy, hope and anxiety that we have lived through in recent times. Now somehow locked in time, these are songs that expose such personal and global fragility that they continue to embrace us as if they were our mother’s arms”. “The concert also includes some rare and never transcribed poetry by Leonard Cohen that I have, with great pain and respect, set to music” ‘Musicians brave enough to make the music they really believe in. Keith James is one of these’ Bob Harris BBC Radio 2 ‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’ The Independent
