The Songs of Leonard Cohen

Songs of Leonard Cohen - Marine Theatre poster

This wonderful Tower of Songs - stripped back and desolate

Enigmatic and sub textural, songwriter Leonard Cohen was an unflinching character, with an exact sense of prose, a wry humour and courage to wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line.

His music befriended an entire generation and so the announcement of his passing has truly marked the end of an era. He challenged us to listen more carefully, speak more thoughtfully, think more deeply and recognize our own humanity.. A Man of Grace. This world will miss him very much..

With a reputation of performing in this exact way and with an undying love of the ‘pure song’ Keith James gives you a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in an intimate and sensitive style, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form.

Amongst a concert of Cohen’s well known songs, including Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne and Hallelujah are also poems by Federico Garcia Lorca that Keith James has set to music. Lorca is said to be Cohen’s greatest influence. Additionally, songs from Leonard Cohen’s Album ‘You want it Darker’ released only 10 days before his death – produced by his son, Adam..

‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’  The Independent
‘Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice’  Sunday Times
‘an elegant and beautifully crafted reinterpretation of a great Artist’s words’  BBC Radio Scotland
‘certainly the UK’s most celebrated and evocative interpreter of golden music’  The Guardian
‘All the tears of time are shed in a few brief lines’  Times Literary Supplement
‘a sensitive and pleasingly understated delivery, all the better that the songs might speak for themselves’  Acoustic Magazine

DUENDE. The surreal, haunting and exotic poetry of: Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende and Federico Garcia Lorca. Performed as passionate songs and set to a collection of rich, daring and fiery classical guitar arrangements. Following his numerous concerts and recordings in which he has taken the work of various Poets; William Blake, Dylan Thomas, Leonard Cohen and successfully transcribed them into what can only be described as truly amazing songs. Keith has now turned his attention to one of his greatest passions; that of the intoxicating and somewhat mysterious world of the most masterful writers in the Spanish language. Lorca: as Spain celebrates 80 years since Lorca’s death at the beginning of the Civil War, his dramatic and impassioned words take on an even greater of human consciousness. He is certainly the most influential of all Spanish Poets. Isabel Allende: the niece of Chilean President Salvador Allende, is one of the most accomplished and celebrated modern writers occupying the multi-dimensional world of Spanish Literature. Pablo Neruda: also from Chile, has been proclaimed internationally, as the most loved of all modern Poets. His verse is deep and romantic in a truly human and delicately intimate way, unlike any other Poet. Gabriel Garcia Marquez: The Master of Magical Surrealism, Colombian Marquez is wildly celebrated for his astonishingly brilliant work as a novelist. 100 years of Solitude being the most celebrated novel of this amazing genre.
