Keith James
The Songs of Leonard Cohen
Press Release – Jan 2011
Leonard Cohen, born 1934, can be described as one of the most accomplished singer song writers of our time. He started out as a poet and novelist at home in Montreal, Canada in the 50s and 60s, and soon began writing music on the Greek Island of Hydra. The basis for his work often focuses on the deepest thoughts and feelings known to man such as sexuality, relationships, religion and morality. Cohen is often highly regarded by critics for his lucid, rich lyrics and intimate composition.
Over 2,000 renditions of Cohen's songs have been recorded but none as desolate and sensual as Keith James’ latest interpretation:
“I’m endeavouring to pair each song back to its’ central core and original sense of purpose by performing each song as near to the way it was originally written, exposing Cohen’s unprecedented sense of humanity
Keith has recently completed a successful national tour (The Great Canadian Song Book) celebrating the pinnacle of Canadian song writers and has since taken a deeper interest into Cohen’s work specifically.
The upcoming tour has become the largest tour of its kind spanning the UK with 63 dates of selected Art Centres and Theatres. Beginning in March with The Rondo Theatre – Bath, through to The Arts Theatre – Solihull, in June; the tour will be one of the greatest honours in Keith James’ 30 year career in music.

The songs of Leonard Cohen
Each song stripped back - desolate, naked and sensual
The most enigmatic, mysterious and sub textural songwriter the English speaking world has ever known. Revered and covered by the entire music community; Leonard Cohen’s exact sense of prose, his wry humour and his courage to wrestle with the unspoken. Forgiving human frailty with the brush of each line.
His recent spectacular world tour of stadium venues has been successful beyond belief but has not, with regret, exposed the solitary inner strength of the songs in their original perfect form.
Keith James; with a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the pure song gives you a concert of this amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable.
Also included are Poems by Federico Garcia Lorca and Leonard Cohen that Keith has set to music.
‘certainly the UK’s most celebrated and evocative interpreter of golden music’ The Guardian
‘Some of the most atmospheric and emotive music you will ever hear’ The Independent
‘Keith James has become a pillar of trust. A sublimely intimate and engaging voice’ Sunday Times
